As we received the entrepreneur of the year award

When we discovered and purchased this very special property in 1999, our long search was brought to a happy conclusion. We had found just the right place to live our dream of building a new enterprise in rural America.

We set out to create an organic herb farm & holistic retreat so our want list was long :  chemical free land, clean air and water, great infra-structure with fast internet access, reasonable taxes, temperate 4 season climate, privacy, scenic beauty, access to Midwest vendors and markets, and much more.

Our land had been vacant for a dozen years, and gently managed before that by generations of one family all the way back to the Civil War. Hardwood forests on rolling hills make up about half of the total, with pastures, ponds, and our newly renovated home occupying the rest. We soon added three yurts.

These unusual structures brought many visitors. At first it was curious locals. Now folks visit from far and wide to stay in a yurt and enjoy the peace of this rustic place. Others come for classes, specially arranged meals for groups, Traditional Chinese Medicine consultations, retreats, Spa Days with massage therapy, fishing, birding, star gazing, and a lot more. Many of our guests have returned a number of times.

We keep enhancing the farm. A central valley proved to be an ideal site for a small lake, so we built a 400 foot long dam and created (Skinny) Dipper Lake with a sandy beach. This gave us gravity fed irrigation water for many acres below.  About 2-1/2 miles of trail has been blazed through the forest and into a hidden valley that abuts state forest land to our North and East. A recent project brought us a central outdoor wood boiler that heats all three yurts, our house with domestic hot water, and two new Japanese soaking tubs under the stars! Very proud of that system. At the same time we added an emergency generator to serve all of our needs in case of power failure.
